Daikin R-32 Sets Sights on Mitsubishi
New models out this fall are substantially better than prior models, and places Daikin in competition range of Mitsubishi's new R-454B units.
One thing we’re considered about from the LC end is that Mitsubishi’s new R-454B models are going to be more expensive. Thankfully, every single brand is releasing new models as a part of this refrigerant change from R-410A over to R-32 or R-454B. We have confirmed that these new models come with a performance boost, and that’s going to help us tamp down prices when it comes to the fall & 2026.
Ducted Systems
Consider this Daikin R-32 3-ton ducted condenser:
The 19.2 ducted SEER2 rating is equivalent to what you'd find in a Mitsubishi light commercial (PUZ/PVA) ducted system today, and a notable jump from the 16.0 SEER2 performance of a standard SVZ system:
The difference is that the PUZ/PVA systems are some of the most expensive systems out on the market today, and you’re likely to be able to get that Daikin DH9 FIT model installed for a bit less.


We’ll be doing a more extensive write-up this summer comparing every single brand, and every one of their new model offerings. But for now, our baseline expectation is that we’ll see more competition this fall in the cold-climate heat pump market. Along with Mitsubishi fixing its oversizing problem, I think the equipment market is headed in the right direction.

I'm still a little surprised that Mitsubishi and so many other manufacturers went for R-454B over R-32 for the US market when R-32 has a much more robust track record of use around the world and R1234yf is patented. I mean hell, Mitsubishi released an R-32 VRF system in the EU market years ago, etc. Carrier's been using R-32 in Europe, etc. I'm not dialed in enough to the industry scuttlebutt anymore to know what else was at play here.
